Rememberance Day Service Day Service Friday, 7th November 2003
We are grateful to the Secretary for his report on the proceedings:
17 Old Boys of the Grammar School met at the Abbot Beyne School by permission of the Head, David Marriott, to remember Old Boys of the Grammar School who had fallen in the last two Great wars. The short service was led by the Head Master before the Old Boys and assembled school. Two lessons read, one by the President John Pickering and the other jointly by the Head Girl and the Head Boy of the school, Wreaths were placed on the memorial tablets by the Secretary Ted Warren on behalf of the Old Boys' Association and by the Head Girl on behalf of the School. At the conclusion of the service the Old Boys were invited by David Marriott to coffee etc. and he gave a short talk on the progress of the School. In addition to the President and Vice‑President, members present included Past Presidents John Illingworth, Mike Hamilton, Robert Knight, Tony Trigg, Norman Tornkins, Ted Weston, Jim Woolley, Don Sharratt, Harry Smith, at the service, together with Les Wright, Ivan Bancroft, Keith Bancroft, Don Ewers and Peter Appleby.

 There were more apologies than usual which resulted in a smaller attendance, these included Past Presidents Alan Neal, Keith Rushton, Roger Deacon, Ces Jenks together with John Welch, Gerry Woolley, Geoff G rimsley, Geoff Nicholson, Stanley Beale, Carey Hopkinson and Stan Webster. All present were sorry that the Editor, Norman Binns, was unable to be present, and that all were delighted that he was recovering from his operation and hoped to see him at the ReUnion in May, 2004.
 

NEWS OF OLD BOYS
Colin Bagshaw
(honorary Staff member) Treasurer of Burton Tennis and S~ Club, is delighted to have been successful in bidding for £73,678 from the Sport of England Lottery Fund. This will allow for surface improvements to four courts, new floodlights to one of the courts and disabled access from the car park to the clubhouse and courts. The club also hopes to develop coaching for juniors,

Andrew Bauer (1961‑68) s currently living and working in Taiwan in the town of Taichung. He is the Quantum manager for the Hochtief (German) /Ballast Nedum (Dutch) 1 Pan Asia (Taiwanese) joint venture constructing a 40 kin section of the 350 km, Taiwan high speed rail project. Taichung is a very pleasant place to live, the lakes and hot mud springs are only a few hours away, and the Taroko Gorge ‑ Taiwan's "Grand Canyon' takes about 6 hours to reach. What does he miss about Burton? ‑ Marston's Pedigree, Edward Street fish and chips, Bird's pork pies and homemade sausages and black pudding from the Branston butcher. What doesn't he miss? The central heating bills. He was a past chairman of Burton Round Table No. 204.

Baron Sydney Brewin (1941‑  47) Our warmest congratulations to Baron Sydney Brewin (1941‑  47) Hayling Island and Castlecoole Co. Kerry on his award of M.B.E. in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services rendered to the Citizens Advice Bureau over many years. We are sorry to report that Sydney has suffered a recurrence of his cancer and his mobility is much impaired.

Gary Brittain (1966‑73) has lived in down town Chicago since 198 1. He has been married for 18 years to Rebie who grew up in Chicago. He. was born in Winshill, and went to Winshill Infants, in Berry Hedge Lane, Joseph Clark and, following the Grammar School, London University. His three brothers, John David and Tony, all live in Stapenhill. 

Judge David Brunning (1954‑62) David was the judge at Nottingham County Court in September 2003, hearing the case of Kevin Lloyd who played Detective Tosh Lines in the 1, T, V, drama "The Bill", who died in the Dove Clinic Rolleston, After a week‑long hearing and two months deliberation Judge Brunning exonerated the clinic from any blame.

Bernard Crump M.B.. Ch.B.. MRCP (UK) FFPH (1968‑75). Bernard is now Chief Executive of the Shropshire and Staffordshire Strategic Health Authority. He is Visiting Chair of the University of Leicester which gives him the title of Professor. He is married with two children, Thomas (7) and Eleanor (11). He trained at Birmingham University Medical School, after leaving the Grammar School. He spent 7 years doing medical and clinical research in Birmingham, Canterbury and London. In 1987 he did a post graduate training in Public Health medicine. He has been a Public Health director ever since in various towns in the Midlands. While at the Grammar School he was a member of the Youth Choir and the Little Theatre Players. In September 2003 he opened the new Winshill Health Centre.

 Dennis Fletcher (1955‑62) has been appointed to the chairmanship of East Staffordshire Racial Equality Council (E.S.R.E,C). He has been involved in this for several years. He will be involved in changes in the inequalities agenda taking place locally, regionally and nationally. He is the East Staffordshire Borough Council member for Winshill, He is retiring this year as headmaster of Bend Oak Junior School.

 Michael Freeman Vicar of St, Johns Horninglow, contributed thoughts in the weekly article headed "Talking Point' October 1 1th  2003, on the Christian principles that can inform the Public Services department in the present political scene with reference to health, education, police, fire and ambulance, roads, railways, care of the elderly and many more.

Terry Hickman (1953‑60) has been President of the Rotary Club of Etwall and Hilton for two years.

 Venerable Richard N. Inwood BA. (1957‑64). The 2003 Newsletter reported on the election of the Venerable Richard N. Inwood BA. (1957‑64) as the new Bishop of Bedford. He was consecrated on March 7th  2003 at Southwark Cathedral by the newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, the most Rev Dr Rowan Williams, supported by over 50 Bishops. The Association was represented by the Vie‑President John Pickering and another member, Dr M. E, Smith BA, PhD, (1958‑65) was present. The Editor was shown a copy of the 26 page service booklet. The opening hymn was "Lift high the Cross, the love of Christ proclaim", and the lesson from the 2nd book of Corinthians Ch. 4 vv 1 to 10 was read by the. Bishop of Westminster. The hymn "Be thou my vision, 0 Lord of my heart" was followed by the Sermon preached by Canon Dr. Christine Baxter the Principal of St John's College Nottingham (where Richard trained), The Anthem was "For the Blessing of the Earth' (John Rutter). The hymn "Come , Holy Ghost, our souls inspire" was followed by the Ordination and the giving of a new Bible to the new Bishop. The hymn "God of grace and God of glory" was followed by Holy Communion with the Choir singing the Agnes Dei by Haydn. The final hymn was "Lord enthroned in earthly splendour". A reception followed at Lambeth Palace,

 Roger Kerry (1951‑55) Roger is Chairman of the Newton Solney Church Roof Appeal, Roger, who lives in Newton Solney, launched the appeal for £145,000 to replace the decaying roof in its historic church, now 800 years old, The event took place in November 2003, in the church, and was attended by villagers and friends.

Canon Eric Lowe MA. (1939‑47) Our congratulations also go to Canon Eric Lowe MA. (1939‑47) of Little Sutton, Elleamere Port, Cheshire, on his celebration of 50 years in the Ministry. His thanksgiving service took place on June 21st  2003 at St Agnes Church, Ullet Road, Liverpool with Bishop John Gaisford as the preacher. Erie is the Regional Dean for the North‑West to the "Forward in Faith" movement.

 Don Payne (1942‑45) competed in the English Masters' Swimming Championships in Sheffield last October, He won Silver medals in the 50 metres Freestyle and the 200 metres Backstroke in the Freestyle and Medley Relays. Ted Evans (1947‑52) was competing in the same Championships. Don is still lecturing one day a week and marking for Cambridge "O” & “A”Level Accounting.

 A.G.M.  Held at the Bretby Conference Centre. Bretby on  May 16 2003 at 7.Oopm.
In the Chair President Alan Neale supported by all the Officers except News Editor Norman Binns from whom there was an apology. 72 members were present and the names of 27 apologies were read out.  The President read out the names of members who had died since the last A,G.M., 15 in number. The Meeting stood in silence for a few minutes in their memory. The Secretary reported on Norman Binns illness, he was asked to convey the meetings best wishes to him and Mary for a successful recovery. The Minutes of the last A.G.M., hold on May17th 2002, were approved and signed, proposed by Dennis Grimsley, seconded by Bob Andrews. The Treasurer Roger Deacon reported that the funds were in excess of £1000 and he. thanked all the members for their generous support. On proposition by Harry Smith, seconded by Bob Knight his report was accepted.

 The President Alan, then thanked all members for the support he has received during what to him had been a very enjoyable year and without more ado, he invested John Pickering as President for the ensuing year.  President John thanked Alan for all he had done for the Association during his year in office. The Secretary on behalf of Norman Binns proposed and seconded that Richard Wain (1944‑50) be elected Vice‑President for the coming year. This was carried unanimously. It was proposed by John Pickering, seconded by Tony Trigg and carried that the Officers be elected en bloc. The future of the Newsletter was discussed and its future was left in the hands of the Editor and the Secretary. A report given by David Marriott, Head Teacher of the Abbot Beyne School, on the progress of the new Visual Arts Centre, after which the Meeting decided to make a donation to the Centre. It was decided that, that in what form this would be, should be left to the Head, who would let us know his choice at the appropriate time. Date of next A.G.M. May 21st  2004. Their being no further business the meeting closed at 7.55 pm

 News of Norman, it has been a very traumatic year as, having worked so hard to recover from having his foot amputated, as a result of a diabetic infection, he is at present back in hospital with another infection, we wish him a speedy recovery.  PROFILE of  VICE‑PRESIDENT (PRESIDENT  ELECT) Richard J. Wain (1944‑1950)
On leaving school Richard Wain joined Rolls Royce at. Derby as an engineering apprentice and obtained an HNC in Mechanical Engineering at Derby Technical College. This was followed by two years National Service in the Royal Air force servicing ground equipment. He returned to Rolls Royce and worked on the development of Gas turbines for vertical lift.  In 1961 he moved to Essex and joined Ford Motor Company, first as a development engineer then as a research engineer on car and truck engines, Then followed 2 years working for Burmah Castrol as a technical adviser to the UK, Motor industry on lubrication.  In 1974 he moved to Bagshot in Surrey and worked for Sperry Gyroscope as a Quality Engineer ‑ initially on the testing of guidance systems for missiles, then preparing and monitoring the company for quality assessments to Defence and British Standards Sperry was taken over by British Aerospace and he became a Project Quality Engineer auditing suppliers for quality control. Finally he joined Ferranti International and qualified as an Institute of Quality Assurance Lead Assessor of Quality systems. In this role he managed the quality systems of a number of major Defence and Civil projects.

On retiring in 1995 he pursued his interests in local history and footpaths, and whilst as a committee member of the Windlesham Civic Society produced several local walk leaflets, including a Parish boundary walk for the Millennium, Since returning to Burton in 2001 he has joined Burton Civic Society and Archaeology Society, and is currently re‑exploring, with his wife, the footpaths of South Derbyshire. He is the elder son of H. J. (Jack) Wain, who was one of the founder members and first secretary of the B, G. S, Old Boys' Association in 1921, who became President in 1946 and a well known local historian and naturalist.

Dr. C. Cooper (1963‑70) of Los Angeles, California, is now a world authority on Exercise Physiology. He lectured at the Second Cambridge UCLA Symposium on Exercise Testing and Interpretation, in July 2003, and has been invited back for July 2004. He travelled far in Europe, promoting his book on Exercise Physiology which is edging up the ranking on Amazon.Com., and is currently being translated into Turkish, Korean and Portuguese. RE-OPENING OF NEW SIXTH FORM CENTRE,

June 13th  2003, A photograph in the Burton Mail on June 17th, showed the Old Boys' President and the Old Girls' President together with the Headmaster, David Marriott, at the opening of the Woodlands Centre, which h as now been refurbished as a Sixth Form Centre, with new classrooms, a computer suite and improved Sixth Form Common Rooms. .The Woodlands House, in the grounds of the former High School, was for many years the home of the Headmistress. 

GOLF     THE  LOWE CUP 2003

The annual members' competition for The Lowe Cup took place at The Burton‑on‑Trent Golf Club, (by kind permission of The Directors), on Friday 16th May. Eight members entered on what turned out to be one of the few rainy days of the year. It was just a steady drizzle at the start and three of the entrants chose to believe the weather forecast, rather than to be super optimists. The three played snooker and stayed dry, while the other five played golf and became wetter and wetter as it mined harder and harder. The winner was Norman Harvey on 31 points, followed by Roy Biddulph and Mick Bond. The £10 entry fees, collected on the day, were kindly donated to the Association funds. This year, the competition will again be held at Bretby. Friday 21st  May is the date to put in your diaries and it is hoped that more members will be able to take part, It will take the form of an 18 holes Stableford competition, off full handicap allowance, off the yellow tees and matches can be arranged by contacting Norman Harvey on 01283 563645 at 90, Ashby Road, Burtonon‑Trent, DE15 OPT,

ABBOT BEYNE PRIZE GIVING

This year, because of a clash in end of term dates with universities and the fact that the star students were on their year out, the usual evening was not held. However the prizes wore awarded by post, In particular, the Old Boys' Association Prize for Cricket was awarded to Matthew Nickson.

IN MEMORY

News has been received of the following Old Boys that have passed away, and we offer our sympathies to members of the families concerned. The following were members of the Association:

James Peter Hartley RIBA (1942‑50) We regret to announce the passing if Past President (1997‑98) James Peter Hartley RIBA (1942‑50) of Egginton who died on August 1st 2003 aged 70 years after a 10 year battle with cancer. Peter sent his usual cheerful letter to the Editor on May 1st  2003 with his apologies for the re‑union, and explaining that he was now attending the Derby City Hospital three evenings each week for Renal Dialysis. The Editor used to see him at the Repton School Subscription concerts and often at the Burton Brewhouse. The Burton Mail headline was “Tributes paid to a man of many roles" as a leading architect and Burton's brewing supreme, He joined Bass in 1957 and rose to become their chief architect, In 1976 he moved into management and became regional director in the Coventry area moving back to Burton in 1987 as Managing Director of Bass Worthington. For his last 4 years before retirement he was seconded to the Prince of Wales' Youth Business Trust in Lichfield as the Manager to assist young people to start up in business. Concept Architect for the Bass Museum, a Director of the Burton Brewhouse and Chairman of the Burton Civic Society, our Secretary described him as the perfect gentleman ‑ we shall miss him very much. His funeral . took place 11th  August 2003 at crowded St. Wilfred's Church at Egginton with the. hymns "The lord's my  Shepherd", "Father hear the prayer we offer" and "Who would true valour see", The Vicar of Egginton the Rev. Stewart Raper conducted the service assisted by a former Vicar the Rev. P, Short. Old Boys in attendance included Vice‑President Richard Wain, Past Presidents Lewis Dunkerley, Jim Woolley, David Hardwick, Tony Trigg and Don Sharratt, also John Copestake of Desford, Leicestershire. Apologies from the Secretary, the Editor and John Palfree.

 Kenneth L.  Neale M.A. (1931‑39) We regret to announce the passing of a distinguished Burtonian Kenneth L.  Neale M.A. (1931‑39) of Belvedere Road on May 6th 2003 in the Queen's Hospital after failing health aged 82 years. A great friend of the Editor, the Burton Mail headline on May 13th was Tribute paid to a great Ambassador with a splendid photograph of Ken with the caption "respected scientist”.  Ken had a distinguished time at school he was a prefect for several years before becoming Head Boy in 1938/39, He graduated from Cambridge University with Chemistry degree, then to Training College before returning to Burton to join the staff of the Technical High School which then became Dovecliff Grammar School and later WuIfric School as Head of Science. He was Secretary of Burton Natural History and Archaeological Society for 37 and was still serving at his passing although he had announced is retirement, He organised hundreds of coach outings and field trips all over he country, and with his wonderful collection of slides gave lectures to many local organisations, such as the Retired Teachers, the Electricity Retired Members, Wesley Guild, Trinity Church George Street, W.Ms, W.E.A.'s  on a variety, of topics such as holidays, geology and local history, He was a splendid speaker with a wonderful sense of humour. A curator of the Bass Museum he took school parties and others around the museum each week. Honorary Chairman of the Electricity Board retired members assisting your Editor on the monthly trips. Among the tributes paid to him were his depth of knowledge and experience, admired and remembered with great affection, unselfish, energetic and immensely intelligent, and able to converse freely in detail on almost any subject.  For some time he spent one night a week in Ward 5 of the Queen's Hospital (the same ward as your Editor was in) so they were able to converse, as he passed away in Ward 8, Mary Binns was one of the last people to visit him.

 The funeral service took place at a crowded St. Chad's Church, where Ken was a member of the P.C.C., on May 1512003 with the Vicar the Rev. Paul Skillings conducting the service, The hymns were "0 Lord my Go&' and "The Day Thou gavest Lord is ended~'. Tributes expressing Ken's life of service to the Town and all his friends were paid by his brother Geoffrey Vernon Neale(1933‑37), retired and living in Bromsgrove, and by our Past President Alan Neal(1950‑57) of Birmingham, the Secretary represented the Association and Mrs Binns represented the Editor.

 W. J. (Jack) Adams (1924‑30) died on January 24th  2004 aged 91 years. Jack was one of the last teachers who taught at Bond Street and at Winshill, the others being Harry Smith and Vic Roebuck. After serving in the 39/45 war Jack taught at Bond Street and Winshill before being appointed Headmaster at Shelton Lock School in Derby from where he retired. He was also in charge of rugby at the old ~mar School where his experience of  playing for Staffordshire and Burton Rugby Club was a great help. He had also been President of the Burton club. His funeral took place at the Anglesey Chapel, Bretby on Tuesday February 4th . It was a very simple service, a few prayers were said and psalm 139 was read before the committal. Present were Past Presidents and members of Burton Rugby Club, former colleagues Harry Smith and Vic Roebuck, The Secretary represented the Association. 

Paul Whieldon (1962‑67) of Granville Close, Hatton (formerly of Cambridge Ontario) passed away onJune20th 2003 aged 52 years. His funeral service took place on June 26h at All Saints Church, Hatton. He was an engineer, working for several engineering companies.

 Wilfred Ride (1935‑42) A.M.Inst. Mech Eng C.Eng., F.Inst.Weld E. passed away on December 17th  2000. Retired Works Engineer to Marston Palmer late I.C.I. Metals Division, Wolverhampton. Buried in Stanton Long churchyard, Much Wenlock, Shropshire. Wilfred signed up for a 5 year apprenticeship in September 1942 at the Locomotive Works Derby and studying at Derby Technical College. He also attended courses at Crewe, Liverpool, Leeds and London. He passed all his exams with honours. As a qualified engineer he applied for a position on the engineering staff of Marston Palmer and was, there until his retirement in 1987. 

Earnest Williams (1929‑34) Living in a residential home in Duffield, formerly of Greenfield Drive, Derby. He passed away in August 2003. He attended several re‑unions in the past.

 Raymond John West (1936‑41) Ray West had retired with his wife, Pat, to Paignton, North Devon. Previously he had been manager of Camera Thorpe, Derby. He was later made a local director and the firm then became known as Peak Technical Services.

 Brian Fretwell (1940‑45) of Shillington, passed away on November 13th  2003 after a short illness, aged 73. The President represented the Old Boys' Association at the funeral service at Luton Crematorium. On leaving school and after National Service, he joined Allied Ironfounders, which became part of the Glynwed Group. He transferred to the London head office of Glynwed and then to their subsidiary company ‑ Vulcathene in 1970 as Financial Director. 10 years later he was promoted to Managing Director. He held this position until his retirement in 1995, During this period he led the company through a period of expansion with the workforce growing from less than 100 to over 400 employees with manufacturing units in both the UK and Holland. The plastic extrusions manufactured by Vulcathene became a world wide export and involved frequent travel to many parts of the world to secure contracts particularly South Africa and China, His great passion was for sport. He joined Burton Rugby club on leaving school and continued playing for Ruislip after his transfer to London, playing regularly up to the age of 45, He also watched England frequently attending matches at Twickenham and away matches in Celtic countries. He watched them in South Africa in 1995 and he Lions in Australia in 1997 and 2001. He also enjoyed squash and golf, taking part in the Old Boys' golf tournament several times. On his retirement he took up flying and gained his solo licence. He leaves 3 sons 7 grandchildren (his wife Beryl predeceased him).

 John Whitehurst (1927‑34) of Fareharn, Hants (formerly of the Post Office, High Street, Burton) passed away November 28th 2003 in hospital, aged 86 years. One of the oldest members of the Association and a friend of the Editor and Stanley Beale (1928‑33), John has suffered poor health for some years, and although being confined to a wheelchair still managed to get around. The funeral service took place on December 1 0th

 Robert Fletcher D.F.C.,  D.F.M. (1926-31) formerly of Burton, passed away on July 16th 2003 at Derby City Hospital aged 88, The funeral took place on July 241 at Markeaton Crematorium, Derby. 

The following Old Boys were not members of the Association, but we remember them and their families.

 Richard Barker (1931‑36) passed away at the Queen's Hospital on June 26th  2003; a eulogy was spoken by his grandson Peter Hirons, who paid a loving tribute to his grandfather. He said that "Dide" Barker was born at Stapenhill Fields Farm on June 20 1920, and after attending Hill Street School and then the Grammar School in Bond Street he went to the School of Agriculture at Sutton Bonnington during the winter months only as he was required on the farm during the summer. He married in 1943 and then moved to Stanton House Farm, An active member of the National Fanners Union, he built up a large dairy herd. He retired in 1984 and became County Treasurer of the NFU. He had many other family interests including the Meynall Hunt Pony Club, and was a great supporter of his family, friends, and organisations. He will be missed. Mrs Binns represented the Editor. The clergy wore the Rev. Michael Andreyev and former Vicar Edward Lobb.

 Kenneth Leslie Frederick Dines (1930‑36) of Swannington Street, passed away at the Queen's Hospital on October 111 2003 aged 83 years. His funeral was held at St Thomas' Methodist Church where he had been a stalwart for many years, conducted by his Minister and next door neighbour the Rev, Peter Howard, In his tribute Peter said that Ken and Beryl shared 21 years of active retirement. Ken was a lovely gentleman who enriched the lives of countless people, a people person with a life centred on the family, they shared 49 year of marriage. He came to Burton from Colchester, Essex, and after leaving the Grammar School went to Bass where he remained until he retired. He was a keen sportsman, football cricket and cycling. He served with the 8th  Army in North Africa. At Church he was Church Treasurer, door steward and magazine distributor, also a splendid neighbour and a great lover of children. All the family will miss him,
