The photo is mid 50s - no later than 1955 I would say -
taken outside the pavilion on the games field behind Peel Croft. Those I can
put names to are:-
Back Row: ? ; Savage ; Taylor ; Evanson ; Minns ; ? ;
Trigg ; Hamilton
Standing in front: ? ; Crocker ; Gibbs ; ?
Sitting: Bowen ; Croft ; ? ; Tilling ; Mayger
I was in LVISc with 'Spud' Taylor and Pete Trigg, in 5X with Mick Hamilton,
who is still active within the OBA, and 'Bocker' Gibbs. Ken Crocker
was a school friend at Grange St Junior School and Victoria Rd Infants. Dave
'Piggy' Bowen will also be well known for his association with Burton Rugby
Club.
Mick Croft was possibly the most outstanding athlete at
School while I was there, as a sprinter and shot putter, I believe he held
the school records. He was unfortunately killed in a motor cycle accident
not long after leaving school. Charlie Tilling went to the same New St
Baptist Church that I did and was also a very good badminton player. Harry
'Spadge' Mayger was, I think, the youngest of the Mayger brothers that were
at BGS in the 40s and 50s, also excelling at swimming as did his siblings
earlier. (From Les Simpson) |

Sports Day 1956
I have enclosed a photo from the School Sports Day 1956 when Mick Croft won
the 100 yards final for Wellington House in the time of 10.3 seconds. Mick
was a very able athlete in the shot and long jump as well as the sprints. He
was Victor Ludorum for his last two years at the school. As well as
athletics he played in the rugby XV and was a member of Burton Rugby Club.
He was fatally injured in a motorcycle accident in 1959. (Les Simpson) |

1968 Athletics: I don't know if
the 2 photos I've found are of any interest or use to you at all, but here
they are, along with scans of the Sports Day programme from 1968 - post them
to the site or throw them away, as you wish. The programme does at least
confirm the spelling of Scruton, who apparently won the First Year High Jump
that year with a massive 4'3". The scanned certificate also confirms the
peak of my athletic performances to date, with a fighting 3rd place in the
'B' hurdles.
One of the photos is a cutting from the
local paper, with a few of the victims for the second day's events, most of
whom I can't remember (in mitigation, I was only there for 2 years),
although back row, second from the right is unmistakably Tony Gott and is
that Ian Redfearn at the end of that row, Ian Thurman third from right in
the front row? Front row, second from left is Stephen Schofield, front row,
third from left is me.
The other photo isn't really relevant
at all, as it was taken at Edge Hill
Primary School, but does show four contemporaries engaged in a
groundbreaking piece of research into pendulum dynamics: from left to
right, Stephen Schofield, Stephen Cort, David Pickering and me on the chair.
.......Best wishes to all those people I haven't seen for thirty eight
years, and I hope all goes well for the (March 2007) reunion. Trevor Hurt. |
