Scout Troop 1952: Following the addition to the
Website of several more official photos taken in 1952 Bob Fletcher and
myself have been corresponding via e-mail to collaborate over naming the 1st
and 2nd formers shown last month. We are within one e-mail of submitting our
best shots at the 2nd formers, which were our own year of entry (1950). In
the meantime I have managed to put names to about 2/3 of the 1952 photo of
the Scout Troup. They are:-
Back Row: Goddard, -- , Ormerod, Wilkinson, Smith B, Hardwick,
Hudson, Woolley.
Centre: -- , --, Smith G, Pickering, --, Griffiths, --, --,
Colley
Front: Adams, --, Richards, --, Whiskey McEwan, Bailey snr.,
--, --, Bailey jnr.

Just visiting the site, I notice the 1952 Scout Troop photo has a
few names missing. I think I can come up with a couple. I'm talking the
middle row here, extreme right is Dave Colley (more later) next to Colley is
Graham Newman, next to Graham is Bob Hayle.
Graham Newman...... was in the 'C' stream entry 1947-1948?, he left
BGS around 1953-54?. He joined the Civil Service at a place called 'The
Rowans' on Ashby Road-BOT. He did his national Service in the RAF 1953-55?.
Served most of his time at RAF Locking, Weston Super Mare. On completing
his service he rejoined the Civil Service and pursued a successful career,
finishing his tour at Birmingham, he also became a successful member of the
England CC team of indoor bowling . Sadly he died about year 2000?.
Incidentally, when he started his CC career, he joined with a colleague and
former pupil, John Dunkerly. who, similarly, had a successful career in the
CC finishing his service in the South Wales area. David ( Dave) Colley,
I was at RAF Stafford NS. 1956-58, there was a throng of airmen milling
around (as they do) one figure emerge from the group and enquired if I was
Ian Giles from BGS, I replied in the affirmative, after exchanging
pleasantries, he kindly offered me a lift over to Burton for the coming
weekend, as Stafford was an awkward place to get to Burton from, I gladly
accepted. Dave had a 250cc BSA C11, I shall always remember him for his
kindness that day, I never set eyes on him again. Bob Hayle...... In
a round about way, I new Bob Hayle for he was a friend of Graham Newman,
(who, was indeed my cousin,) Bob was dead keen on the CCF, so much so, he
obtained a commission in the Royal Marines, I'm not sure whether he was a
National Serviceman or professional soldier, (I suspect he was NS) Well,
this was in 1956, which you probably know was the year of the Suez Crisis.
Sadly, Bob was KIA on operations, I don't remember the circumstances of his
death, he would only have been 18 or 19 years of age. Well, there you are, I
hope some of this may come in useful some day, you never know. ....
from Ian Giles (July 2006)
Second thoughts Bob Hayles? Soon after I posted to you, I saw another
name and face, one, E. (Ted) Ufton same era, now I am not sure whether it
was Hayles or Ufton that got killed in the Suez Crisis. I am sure though,
it is Bob Hales in the photo, definite. |

The Scout Troop, May 1958. As boys from throughout the
school I can help little with the names. The Scoutmaster is Walter
Chadbourne, who only took over that year, his predecessor Mr.McEwan
(nickname “Whisky” but I can’t remember his proper name, having got a new
job in the Preston area). The senior scout furthest left on the middle row
as you look at the photo is Mick Payne (I am directly in front of him,
although second in from the left) and third from the left and thus next to
me is K.Stansbury; also middle row on the other side of Mr.Chadbourne but
next but one to him is David (Bonzo) Burns [I don’t know where he got the
nickname but assume he was called it at school but as he was well above me I
can’t confirm this. He lived just a few doors from me and was certainly
known as such locally] From Roger Newman
