This photo shows the result of a Zeppelin raid on Burton
in early 1916.The Headmaster's house which stood on Lichfield St. was badly damaged. The
Hall and part of 'M' Room can be seen in the background.... Les Simpson |

This is a photograph of part of the school facing towards
Lichfield Road and probably taken around the early 1900's. From the left, the first part
of the building (behind the tree) is the Chemistry lecture room, later to become 'G' Room
Ron Illingworth's Geography room. Next with what looks like a tall chimney stack is 'F'
Room, some ex-occupants can perhaps recall whose formroom it was. The long building with
the bell towers is the School Hall/Gym which in the 50's had ropes and a beam as permanent
fixtures and a badminton court marked out on the floor. It was used for Morning
Assembly where prayers, hymns, Bible readings and announcements took place after
registry and before first classes each day. At the time of the photo the Hall could well
have contained the Headmaster's desk and boy's desks too.
The next part of the building is 'B' Room and then 'A' Room, the latter was
used as the evening detention room, where offending boys were kept for 30 or
40 minutes after school to contemplate their misdemeanours or make amends
for them. Later a prefabricated Physics Lab ('X' Room) was erected outside
'G'and'F' Rooms and part of the Hall. Another prefabricated building was
erected on the grassed area outside 'A' and 'B' Rooms which comprised 'Q'
and 'R' Rooms and a toilet block. 'Q' Room was used by 5A as their form
room.(certainly in the 50's).... |
| An interesting thing
about photo 1 is that it was obviously taken before the first floor addition
to the main part of the building in Bond Street itself. If you look in
Radford's Deus Nobiscum at the illustrations after page 96, which in fact
contain copies of some of the plates you have on the website, plate 10 shows
the School Hall from a slightly different angle, and on the building at the
far right it can be seen that there are now two floors where on the website
photo there is only one. The addition housed the Staff Room, Book Store,
Staff Cloakroom, Biology Prep Room and Joe's office, Biology Lab., and
Art Room, (this may well be the Photo 5B) which was divided to make another
classroom 'L' room in 1950.

Shows the Headmaster's house in the early 1900's. The
building on the right was originally used as a dining room before becoming 'M' Room and
housed form 4A. The ground floor of the large house became the School Library (large
window on the left) and 'P' Room (two smaller windows to the right), I'm not sure whether
LVIM was housed here but the Spanish lessons were usually in this room. The first floor was
used by the Upper VI and Prefects. On the lawn in the foreground prefabs 'Q' and 'R' Rooms
were later erected, (5A and 5B I think) and to the right of the school end of 'M'
Room running parallel to 'X' Room were 'S' and 'T' Rooms which were more like huts
with a large cast iron round stove that burned coke and a chimney that went straight up
through the roof. Forms 5X and 5C were billeted here I believe. |

a- The Woodwork Room
which seems not to have changed from the time of this photo to the 50's when I was there.
I half expected to see dear old Taffy Davies displaying his undoubted skills to the
budding carpenters and DIY experts!
b. See above
c. Pretty self explanatory, The School Rugby team 1912-13
taken outside the small door leading from the Hall into the garden where
eventually the prefabs Q,R,S,T and X were erected.
