1957

Hi, I was in Entry 1956, this photo is Entry 1957. I know some of the names as follows.
Back row  Keith Maw, Graham Marshment ? ? ? Barry Minns ? ? ? ? David Griffin
Middle Row ? ? ? ? Henry Foster, Bob Toon, ? ? ? ? ?
Front Row ? ? ? Doug Pinner ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
Hope this helps, Regards, Maurice Pett

I found the school website last week and immediately saw a photo of myself staring back at me! The class of '57 when I joined is form 1b. I started in September in 1c following those dreadful first day exams and moved up to 1b at Christmas that year, staying 'b' stream for the rest of the five years. I then spent 3 years in the sixth and took A-levels twice to get better grades. Maurice Pett, whom I knew well from Bretby, has rembered me in the photo. Here are some suggestions for most of the others, although some Christian names are more difficult.
Back Row: Keith Maw, Graham Marshment, John Nutt, Rogers, Tomlinson, Barry Minns, Austin Cotton, Keith Olner, Gavin Sercombe, Philip Shuttleworth, Myself.
Middle Row: Graham Bullock, Graham(surname), Kevin Stansfield, Harrison, Henry Foster, Bob Toon, ?, Rob Musson, ?,Parker, ?
Front Row: Ken Brown, John Fryatt, John Meacham, Doug Pinner, Keith/Kevin Hawes, Scruffy Haywood, ?, David Clay, Minner, ?, Dunn. In 1974, before I got married, I changed my name by deed poll and became David W. Maynard-Griffin. My school records show me as David W. M. Griffin, including the signature in the Prefects Book! I have had fun trying to remember who's who and would be pleased to track down Kieth Maw and Philip Shuttleworth if possible, whose families I knew well. David Maynard-Griffin, Yeovil, Dec 2006.

Front: Richard N Inwood; Alan T Stewart; Chris R Howe; AJ (‘Elvis’) Presswell; Cooper (?Alan); Dave W Gooderick; Chris R Jeggo.
What I remember about this photo being taken was that the sun was shining in our eyes, although there are no clear shadows in the photo itself.   Maybe it was a hazy sun but right behind the photographer.  Anyway, I held my smile as long as I could but the dazzle became too much for me (my eyes were watering), and then the photographer pressed the button.  My Mum wasn’t pleased!

Attached is a further photograph with the names (again put on some time later than the photo was taken, so not guaranteed)put onto the bottom of the photo. John Watson was the Head Boy and I think David Gooderick the Deputy Head Boy and both these and a few of the others (I can’t remember exactly who, but not me) were once in that experimental form 5X, which jumped from the 3rd to 5th form. Only those 5X boys who did a Third Year Sixth will still have been at school when this photograph was taken so it will not have on it all the 5X boys. I think after this the top six, or so, of 2a jumped into 4a rather than any jump from the 3rd to the 5th. From Roger Newman.

The Prefects

I’m sure the year on this photo is wrong too as I was either in the scouts or played 1st XV rugby with them.
Back-row left to right:- -----,Bri Eyden,-----,-----,Charlie Rees,,------,------, Stu Goodhead
Middle-row left to right:- Barry Minns, ? Warren, Roger Dickie, Andy Pitt,------, -----,Dave Rose,------,------
Front-row left to right:- -----, ----- , ----- , ----- , ----- , Head Master, ------,------, ----- , John Toplis, Alan Cure (says Buster Bradley)

Next photo of prefects on 1957 page: I think this must be a year later than the preceding one, so most of them are the entry of 1958.  back: ‘Dickie’ Bird; -; Pete Rose; Dave Redfern; Charlie Rees; -; Mick Badcock; -.  middle: -; -; -; Andy Pitt; -; Griffiths; Dave Rose; -; -.  front: Roger Miles; RW Smith; Geddes Reid; Griffin; Somekh; WH Gillion; Thompson; Roger Newman; Mick Smith; John Toplis; Alan Cure seems right. (says Chris Jeggo)

Left of Charlie Reece is Dave Redfern , Right of Charlie is Mick Badcock. The guy with specs left of Andy Pitts is Criuchie Hill. Left of Dave Rose is Spider Grffiths, then Geoff Johnstone and Bob Nutt. On the front row I think the left is Michael Smith, then Robert Smith. Right of The Beak is T.A.K. Thompson. That’s all I recognise.(Says Pete Redfern)

My brother (John Nutt) and I are both old boys. He brought to my attention two photos of me and some of my classmates (I was 1958 entry, he was 1957). There is a photo entitled '1957 prefects' for which Pete Redfern has found many names including my neighbour then, Brian Eden. I agree with all of Pete's naming except mine - I'm David and not Bob Nutt although there is some justification for the confusion - I dropped my first Christian name 'Robert' in my early years in favour of my third Christian Name 'David'. Pete refers to Crunchie Hill (Alan) to the left of Andy Pitts - he's correct. Geoff Johnston and I are on the right of Dave Rose, 'Spider' Griffiths is on the left of him. I'm on the extreme right of the middle row. On the back row, to the left of Charlie Rees (or is it Reece) is Dave Redfern and to the left of Stuart Goodhead who is on the extreme right back row is Mick Badcock. I hope all that's not too confusing. I'd love to hear from anyone else out there with enough grey cells left to remember. David Nutt.

Regarding the photographs, Terry Morse is spot on with the names- the one first name he missed is Michael “ Spud “ Taylor (see other photo).  I think this must be 1964/65 L VI Sc (1) or 1965/66 U VI Sc (1) as Spud took a year out in the States and then came back to join us in the Sixth, but I can’t remember in which year. The prefect’s year must be the year ahead in 1964/65?; next to Barry Minns is Mickey Warren and I think it is Tony Fisher between Mick Babcock and Charlie Reece. (says John Hutt j.hutt@penspen.com )
