I reckon it might be July 1960 when the posers were
relaxing after the rigours of GCE A Levels. From the left: Rodney Farr,
David Bailey, John Smith, Dave Billings, Andy Williams. I have no idea
what happened to them post BBGS except for David Bailey who I last saw in
1970 when he was working for the BBC. David was our form register custodian
during our Upper Sixth Science year. He was entrusted with the onerous task
of marking the register and returning it to Joyce Keightley in the office.
As such, he was usually a few minutes late in arriving for the afternoon
session. On one occasion, we were upstairs in the Senior Physics Lab under
the tender care of Les Basford. Les started the lesson by demonstrating a
fiendish piece of equipment that generated several thousand volts. At that
moment, David Bailey entered, having completed his registration task, to be
greeted by Les in his inimitable nasal drawl; “Mmmm, Bailey, nice to see
you. I need your help in this experiment: please hold these wires for a
second”. Dave just about managed the second as his arms then described
perfect arcs, accompanied by a cry, as we assumed, of severe discomfort.
“Thank you, Bailey”, from the unperturbed Les. No doubt there are countless

recognise David Berker - left front and Bill Royall - right front.

master is Cyril Edlin, Senior English Master who sadly died at his desk in
