                                South Derbyshire Coalfields

Map of South Derbyshire Coalfields:
from Royal Coal Commission 1871 - from Map 4.

The vertical shading indicates the presence of coal bearing strata beneath overlying formations at depths under 4000 ft. The broken shading indicates that the precise conditions are unknown.

The fathers of many of BGS students worked in the mines and, before proper wash facilities were installed, could be seen coming home with faces still black as coal.
